Parenting Workshop:
Hosted by John Thomas Trimble, Ph.d,
Christian Psychological and Family Services
www.christianpsychological.com

Summer 2005, NLEC offered a parenting workshop to help strengthen families that are living in the shelter and prepare them for a better life with their children in their own apartment.

"Parenting is not a job, it is a responsibility.  You can quit a job, you can change jobs and you can get a raise.  Your children belong to you, they are yours, they will always be yours.  Even when they are grown with children of their own, you will still be mom or dad.  You can "quit" parenting, but it doesn't work the kids will still be there.  You can't change children; other people's are not much different than yours, or they could be word!  And the only real reward for the job is a job well done. "

"Webster defines parent primarily as a noun.  I disagree.  I believe it is a verb.  If you are to have the kind of children you envision, you must parent your children with purpose.  If you expect to have good memories with your children, then you must make good memories.  If you want them proficient in running a home or holding a job, you must teach them those things, not just tell them to perform those duties via a chore list.  Parenting is an action word.  There are lots of things for you to do.  The main input in your children comes from you.  There are others who will contribute, teachers, clergy, coaches, scout leaders and so on, they will each put in their tow cents (good or bad) but actually it's all up to you."

Weatherization Seminar
Hosted by Rev. Larry Rice
Director of the New Life Evangelistic Center
http://www.larryriceministries.org/

October 2005, NLEC offered a weatherization seminar for people struggling to pay their heat and gas bills.

How to save money on your winter heating bill:
-Turn down the water heater thermostat to 120 degrees
-Turn off lights when leaving a room
-Set thermostats to 68 degrees in the winter when you're home, and down to 55 degrees when you go to bed or when you are away.  Programmable thermostats are another option.
-Use energy-saving settings on washing machines, clothes dryers, dishwashers, and refrigerators.
-Wash clothes in cold water and only in full loads.
-Close heating vents in unused rooms.
-Close drapes (and window) after sunset in the winter

Marriage Seminar
Hosted by John Thomas Trimble, Ph.d,
Christian Psychological and Family Services
www.christianpsychological.com

October 2005, NLEC offered a free marriage seminar for families in need.

Self-evident Axioms of Marital Stability:

1.  Never threaten the foundations (divorce, separation, leaving)
2.  Never let the balance of the relationship become distorted
3.  You can always tell, but you can't un-tell.
4.  Harsh words spoken, 'Tho' taken back, are still remembered, and the damage remains.
5.  Authority must never be tyrannical
6.  Submission does not mean unquestioning slavery
7.  High achieving persons consult with experts:  low achieving persons consult with friends.
8.  Never attend marriage enrichment events as a short-cut substitute for marital counseling.
9.  In- laws must always be approached through the parents' own child only.
10.  Issues of power and control reveal themselves primarily in money management, but also in time and place accountability.
11.  Pre-marriage counseling is one of the best ideas there ever was -- but the least used.
12.  There is a way to "Fight fair and remain friends."
13.  Parenting must be a shared role, as must home maintenance.
14.  All work and little play leads to imbalance and big problems.
