For over forty-two years, New Life Evangelistic Center which in incorporated under the laws of State of Missouri as a church, has sought to fulfill its Biblical mission of providing shelter and a wide range of other services to the poor and homeless. This Biblical mission is central to Judeo Christian beliefs that the homeless (stranger) is to be provided with sanctuary and shelter in their time of need. (See Lev. 19:33)

Rev. Larry Rice, Rev. Ray Redlich, and Rev. Chris Rice along with the rest of the NLEC Staff believe that to not shelter the homeless means leaving Christ Himself on the streets (Matt. 25:35). Heb. 13:1, 2 clearly says to let love continue. “Do not forget to entertain strangers (the homeless) for by doing so some have entertained angels unaware.”

New Life Evangelistic Center clearly believes that the provision of shelter is a function of worship and the denial of this right is a fundamental blow to religious freedom.

The St. Louis Board of Public Service is now reviewing the hotel permit NLEC has had since 1976 to shelter the homeless. The issues presented at www.nlecstl.org include the findings of facts that have been presented in hearings before the Board of Public Service since September 24, 2013. When you review the post hearing summary you will see how the application of the city code 11.72 to revoke New Life’s permit constitutes an unconstitutional deprivation of religious freedom not only for New Life but for any religious organization.

Join NLEC Staff at 2:00 pm on Wednesdays for weekly Community Meetings or Call (314) 421-3020 and find out what you can do to help fight for New Life’s right to shelter the homeless and its trainees at 1411 Locust. Please Help Save the Last Major Walk-In Shelter in the Greater St. Louis Area

Since 1976 New Life Evangelistic Center has had a hotel permit granting it the right to shelter at that location. Now rich developers and condominium owners are trying to get the St. Louis Board of Public Service to take away this hotel permit in order to drive the homeless, most of whom are African American out of the downtown area. Rev. Larry Rice and the staff of New Life Evangelistic Center for 40 years has provided shelter and transitional housing for the homeless at 1411 Locust.

The Board of Public Service will be announcing their decision in a public meeting on Tuesday October 21, 2014 at 1:45 pm in Room 208 of the St. Louis City Hall. Stay tuned to KNLC Channel 24, this website, Facebook or Twitter for further information.

Please sign up now to be at that meeting to help save the shelter.
