On October 21st we gathered in Room 208 of St. Louis City Hall for what was to be the final determination by the Board of Public Service. Instead of making a decision concerning New Life’s hotel permit the Board Chairman read a letter from the Mayor’s Chief of Staff asking for the decision to be delayed. The Board then proceeded to vote to have such a delay.
Thank you for your prayer support during this very difficult time. Each delay allows New Life Evangelistic Center to continue its invaluable services of providing emergency shelter for the homeless and housing for its trainees.
Now with winter quickly approaching we must raise much needed financial support for the following four critical areas.
HOMELESS WOMEN WITH CHILDREN
The first program is our women’s shelter. I have found that it is impossible for me to turn away a single mother with children.
There is nothing more heart wrenching than to see a mother with children who has no where to go.
To see a mother crying and begging for help so her children won’t suffer is something you never forget.
Many times I can’t sleep because I see their faces over and over again. These situations are horrible.
Lots of the women have been physically, mentally, and sexually abused and have no where to turn. As we face the future with your help, New Life will be here for these tortured souls providing not only shelter, but additional opportunities for these women and their children to get apartments of their own.
As most of you know, I have a special place in my heart for our soldiers and veterans. Our motto at New Life is “they fought for us… let’s fight for them.”
Many times when I meet a homeless veteran, I feel extremely guilty.
I always give them a strong handshake and thank them for serving our country.
No matter how tough life gets for them, they stand proud. They wear their hats with the symbols of the units they have served with.
Many of them still wear their military jackets even if they are living on the streets. They are extremely proud of the medals they have earned.
They would never have turned their backs on our country. But in lots of situations, our country has turned its back on them.
Everyday homeless veterans show up at our door. I welcome all of them. Now, we intend to continue to fight for them.
ON THE JOB TRAINING PROGRAMS
Trainees and graduates of our various training programs have jumped by as much as 40% in 2014, and it is exciting to watch each person develop and grow.
Growth in this area calls for an increase in monthly support gifts to cover the various needs of more full time residents in the New Life training programs.
It is such a blessing to see how the homeless are growing spiritually and being set free from the cycle of homelessness as they become involved in New Life’s transitional housing and leadership programs. This miracle is possible because of caring people like you who are praying and sharing their generous financial gifts.
EMERGENCY FOOD AND WARM CLOTHING
As ironic as it may seem, there are thousands of starving men, women and children living in the richest country in the world.
Every day, New Life feeds so many hungry and homeless people. This involves not only hot meals, but the distribution of up to 1,000 sandwiches a day.
Also, at this time our free stores need coats, hats, gloves, warm shirts, pants, socks, thermal underwear, boots, and blankets for those who need them and can’t possibly afford them.
It means so much to these suffering homeless and hurting people to have a good meal and warm clothes.
That’s why I am writing to you today to ask you to share a special gift now with New Life at this critical time of year.
You have been so faithful to God’s work among the hurting. Without your prayers and support none of this would be possible and the downtown developers would have stopped New Life Evangelistic Center from sheltering the homeless at 1411 Locust.
I am praying that you will send your most generous gift now, so that there is no interruption of services and no lack of whatever may be needed to help homeless, hungry, hurting people survive.
Your gift of $50, $25, $100, $200, $500, or more will mean those who have nothing and nowhere to turn will be sure to get the help they need.
We count on your prayers and generosity to keep the last remaining walk in shelter, the New Life Evangelistic Center, open at this time.
Forever in Christ’s Service,
Rev. Larry Rice
P.S. This year has been extremely challenging. We cannot turn our backs on homeless mothers with children, or the homeless veterans who need us. We must feed, clothe and shelter the hungry and homeless. Your gift now will ensure we can continue helping those in terrible need. God Bless You for your partnership and for all you helped make possible this year.
